WSI is a process of converting tissue sections on glass slide into digital images. Slide Scanners are used to digitize whole tissue, cells or any matter mounted on a physical glass slide.

The scanner captures the tissue as a series of high-resolution image tiles and computationally assembles them into a seamless whole-slide image. The resulting image is stored in a multi-resolution pyramidal format, allowing efficient navigation from low-power overview to high magnification.
On a conventional microscope when we observe a specimen with 20x objective, we could see only a small portion of the specimen at 200x magnification. We have to move stage to change the location on the specimen.
